For the disabled traveller there are several tour operators which offer interesting holidays in the Canary Islands. However, generally provisions are poor, except in major resorts and hotels. Most monuments are not accessible, either due to their location, or because of numerous steps. Public transport is not very well prepared for the disabled, nor are most public toilets or other public facilities. Generally though the authorities and hotel companies are becoming more aware of the needs of the reduced mobility tourists, adapting many of the services to accomodate them.
In Tenerife for instance:-
The Arona Tourismo have
recently carried out a:-
Leisure & Accessible Beach Plan. Playa de Los Cristianos (left) - Playa de Las Americas in Tenerife South is one holiday destination which now offers a wider range, thanks to its climate, all year sunshine & adapted hotels. A new 5 Kilometre-long barrier free seaside promenade, adapted sports and shopping centres. Even theme parks and specifically its magnificent beaches. Playa de Los Christianos offers Two totally adapted beaches thanks to its collaboration agreement with Sinpromi ( Islands promotion society for the handicapped ).
They also offer a Amphibian Chair. With a all year daily service from 10am to 6pm. There are 3 ways to book this facility by phone 922761600 or e-mail or directly at Red Cross lifeguard huts which are in accessible areas.
In Fuerteventura
Unlike most of the destinations in the Canaries, Fuerteventura does not have the steep slopes up to all the hotels in the holiday resorts, and the regulations on catering for those with disability are upheld. Although some of the ramps provided for people with disabilities are quite short but steep. Corralejo recently won a blue flag award for its beach, and one of the criteria was access for those with disabilities so you can see that this island is friendly to those with disability.
In Lanzarote: Costa Teguise is the flattest resort, we believe that the local tourist board are working on disabled access. The Cactus Gardens is also wheelchair friendly and the Mirador del Rio has a lift so this should be all ok. Other places to try: Peurto Calero (The Yellow Submarine will be able to accomodate you on a trip) Also Timafaya National Park will cater as trip inside Park is carried out on a coach.
In Gran Canaria:
There are good facilities for the disabled at all the terminals of the international airports in the Canaries. Gran Canaria's major resorts of Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas, Meloneras, Puerto Rico and Mogan have a selection of hotels with disabled adapted rooms that are wheelchair friendly. There has been recent investment in extensive promenade development along the coast in the south, which is now complete and is easily accessible for wheelchair and mobility scooter users. All the commercial centres have good access ramps to restaurants, bars and shops and the pavements are now better suited for wheelchair users than in the past. However, many of the older small bars and restaurants are still lacking in ramps and disabled facilities and although changing, it is happening slowly!

Adapted taxis with electric wheelchair lifts are available for airport transfers and short trips in Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas and Meloneras. At the current time, other island areas do not have adapted taxis but do have estate cars and some seven-seated vehicles where a wheelchair can be carried in the boot. .
