THE GOLF SCENE

The Canary Islands are becoming one of the most sought after golfing destinations in the World, due to its superb all  year sunshine with temperatures consistantly higher than the mainland,  the Canary Islands not only attract the professional but amateur golfers as well, who all come to enjoy its many courses that vary in both difficulty & design. It is because of this, that Fuerteventura hosted the Spanish Open in 2004 and this on a course which was only completed in Spring 2002.

Many of the courses are designed by famous architects including Seve Ballesteros, Ron Kirby, Mackenzie Ross, Blake Stirling & Marco Martin.  The majority of courses all have the combination of both stunning natural beauty together with challenging course designs

The Canaries presently have 16 golf courses,

Seven in Tenerife, Six in Gran Canaria, One in Lanzarote , another in Fuerteventura.

plus one in La Gomera.

There are also many new courses, under differing stages of development with Fuerteventura boasting four such examples. Every year visitors come to the Canaries mainly from mainland Spain, the United kingdom and Germany in order to practise golf.

The huge growth in popularity in the islands of this traditional sport has resulted in the demand for courses amongst the tourists continually becoming greater. As a result of this, as well as the courses which already exist, there are nine courses under construction and another ten in the planning stage. However, away from the present methods and opportunities for attracting a higher class tourism that the proliferation of golf courses provide, the game of golf in the Canaries has its roots in the close relationship which have exited since the 19th Century between the Canaries and the British Isles.

Today the golfer who wants to play golf on his holidays will have the advantage, in comparison with other holiday destinations, of having the possibility to play throughout the year as a result of the Archipelago’s climate. In turn, the diversity of the islands’ countryside allows golf to be played next to the sea, close to wonderful beaches with a refreshing breeze or in any of the courses located in the islands’ interior surrounded by mountains and valleys of leafy vegetation.
